Raised cedar beds close enough to the kitchen door that nobody has to put on boots for a handful of herbs. An espaliered apple runs along the south face of the old stone wall. The stone holds heat and brings the bloom on early, so we chose a late-flowering variety to stay ahead of a hard frost.
The deer fence runs behind the wall line, and a new wooden gate closes the gap. The beds are sized so that one person can reach the middle from either side.
